DEMENTIA CARE AND ASSISTED LIVING

Dementia is a term for a decline in brain function that seriously impairs with daily life. It impairs with memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but there are other types too, like vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Dementia usually gets worse over time, causing more severe symptoms. Dementia is biologically causes by Death of Neurons in Brain.

Unfortunately, with the exception of dementia caused by vitamin deficiency, hypothyroidism, and normal pressure hydrocephalus, other types of dementia cannot be cured.

It is important to note that the early signs and symptoms of certain health conditions can be quite subtle and may not be immediately obvious.

Some of these symptoms include:

  • Memory loss – particularly short-term and USTM memories
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Personality changes
  • Language difficulties
  • Difficulty in socializing with family and friends
  • Confusion about time and place
  • Mood changes

Patients with dementia can live for years, but they often experience distress and require specialized care. Here are some common issues patient’s faces :

  • Loss of spatial orientation: Patients may wander away from home and fail to return.
  • Repeatedly asking for food and needs: Patients may forget that their needs have already been met.
  • Incontinence and personal neglect: Patients may experience urinary incontinence and may even pass urine in public spaces.
  • Sleep disturbance: Patients may have difficulty sleeping.
  • Agitation and irritability: Patients may become aggressive or violent.
  • Psychosis: Patients may experience hallucinations and delusions.
  • Nocturnal delirium: Patients may become disoriented and confused during the night.
  • Depression: Patients may experience low mood and loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.

Patients with dementia often have other medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and bronchial asthma. These conditions must be treated appropriately. Caring for a loved one with dementia can be challenging, and siblings may find it difficult to provide the necessary care. Property disputes, marital problems, and other family conflicts can make the situation even more difficult. Children may also be exposed to unhealthy models of caregiving. As a result, many families turn to paid care centers for help. However, there are few dementia care centers available, and many families end up admitting their loved ones to unregistered homes with inadequate care.

At Athma Dementia Care Centre...

We provide comprehensive care for people with dementia. Our multidisciplinary team includes a psychiatrist, psychologist, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and caregivers who work together to provide personalized care to each client.

We assess each client individually, taking into account the severity of their dementia, any medical conditions they may have, and their functional status. This personalized assessment helps us create a comprehensive care plan tailored to meet each client’s unique needs.

We use various techniques to help our clients with cognitive rehabilitation, including visual aids with pictures, memory aids, visual cues, structural tools, puzzles, and brain games. We also personalize photo albums and visual prompts to aid communication. Our clients learn skills through procedural learning and intellectual stimulation. We also use modeling, prompting, and space retrieval to enhance their learning.

We encourage physical activity through aerobic exercises, seated exercises, resistance training, balance training, gardening, household activities, group activities, and relaxation exercises. We also provide environmental stimulation, loving care, enriching nutrition, and facilitate good sleep for our clients

Medications

Medications are provided to clients based on their symptoms of dementia. There is currently no single drug that can cure or completely eliminate dementia. However, there are several drugs available that can help slow down the degenerative process. Some commonly used drugs include Donepezil, Rivastigmine, Memantine, and others.

Additionally, recent research suggests that the gut (probioties) may provide some relief to clients. Low-dose antipsychotics and antidepressants are given to reduce psychotic symptoms, disorientation, and depressive symptoms. Mood stabilizers are used to control agitation and violence, while short acting Benzodiazepines are used to promote peaceful sleep. Clients with co-morbid medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension may also receive medications to manage those conditions.

At Mind City, our goal is not to cure the disease (which is currently impossible), but rather to provide our clients with dignified assisted living in their final years. This approach gives caregivers a sense of satisfaction that they have not abandoned their loved ones.
